VTS advises on how to choose a proper air curtain?

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) defines an air door as follows: "In its simplest application, an air curtain is a continuous broad stream of air circulated across a doorway of a conditioned space. It reduces penetration of insects and unconditioned air into a conditioned space by forcing an air stream over the entire entrance. The air stream layer moves with a velocity and angle such that any air that tries to penetrate the curtain is entrained. Air curtain effectiveness in preventing infiltration through an entrance generally ranges from 60 to 80%". However picking the right one is not an easy decision to make.

  1. How to choose a proper air curtain?
When it comes to choosing the right air curtain you should remember that the air outlet from the air curtain should be wider than or equal to the width of the door opening. For effective protection, et the fan speed to such a level that regardless of the mounting height, the air speed near the floor is not less than 2 m/s.
  2. What air curtains VTS Euroheat offers?
Vts Euroheat offers 3 heights of air curtains, namely 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m. All the sizes of air curtains are available in the following configuration: the water heat exchanger (WING W), electric heaters (WING E) and without heating function, the so-called cold air curtain (WING C)
  3. Is it possible to mount all wing air curtains in both vertical and horizonatal position?
Most air curtains can be installed both ways: horizontally (WING W/E/C) and vertically (WING W/C) regardless of the length. In the case of vertical installation it is possible to mount the motor pointing upwards or downwards. he mounting method does not affect system stability in any way. Please note that the air curtains with electrical heaters (WING E100-E200), both with AC and EC motors are not suitable for vertical mounting.
  4. What is the function of louvers in the heat exchanger?
Louvers increase the heat exchange surface which results directly in the efficency increase of transferring the heat from the heating medium to the air.
  5. Is there an option to build the air curtain into a suspended ceiling?
Wing air curtain is not suitable for installation in suspended ceilings, as this could restrict the air flow in front of the individual components. You need do maintain the minimum distance of 10 cm between the device and the ceiling.
  6. How to adjust the rotational speed of the Wing curtain depending on the expected mounting height?
Each Wing curtain has three stages of fan speed forced by the controller.
  7. What about Wing cold curtains?
Cold curtains have no heating function. These models wing C100, wing C150, wing C200 are not equipped with a water or electric heater with the effect that the temperature of the air stream at the curtain’s outlet is equal to the temperature of the air drawn from the environment.
  8. When calculating the heating power what temperature of the air needs to be taken into account?
The air temperature prevailing in the room or the temperature to be set and maintained by other heating systems.
  9.  Wall-mounted wing controller – is there an option for adjusting the level of the curtain’s heating power with the controller?
Yes. The Wing wall-mounted controller has a HEAT switch, allowing two-stage adjustment of the heating power of the WING E electric curtain. For WING W water curtains, equipped with a valve, there is only the possibility of switching the heating function on or off (the heating function is only active when the switch is in the the HEAT position 1 - after switching to another position the valve will not open). Without the use of a valve, the curtain exchanger remains on the free heating medium flow and the HEAT switch located on the WING controller is inactive. A special case of connecting the water curtain without the valve, but with the actuator is determined in the point 10 below.
  10. Why is it not recommended to connect the door switch along with the valve and actuator in the wing W curtains?
When connecting a door sensor it is not recommended to use a valve with an actuator due to increased inertia of the system i.e. the heating time of the heat exchanger and the time it takes for the actuator to open the valve.
  11. Where in the housing of the curtain are the electric cable gland located?
The glands are located on the right side of the curtain behind the motor. The picture shows the placement of the cable grommets: no. 1 - grommet of the control cables, no. 2 - grommet of the supply lines, no. 3 - outlet grill of the motor VTS advises on how to choose a proper air curtain? - 1
  12. What range of air stream do wing curtains have?
The maximum range of air stream for the WING curtains with the water or electric heaters is 3.7 m. For cold curtains the maximum range is 4 m. .
  13. Is it possible to connect wall-mounted wing controller with any amount of air curtains?
Due to the contact load, the wall-mounted WING controller can be used to supply only one WING curtain. In order to control more curtains with a single controller, use an additional contactor in the power supply circuit of the curtains. For more detailed information, please consult VTS technical support department.
  14. Is it possible to connect wing HMI controller wing with and amount of air curtains?
HMI controller can be used to power and control of up to 4 WING curtains.
  15. Is there any difference between the valves with actuators used in the Volcano and Wing air curtains?
No, they are the same. The same specification in both.
  16. Can the air curtains be mounted in groups?
Yes, it is possible to mount the curtains in groups, which enables the security of the door opening of any length (eg. 3 m, 3.5 m, 4 m, etc.).
  17.  What are the greatest advantages of air curtains?
In winter, air curtains prevent warm air from escaping the room and the cold air entering the room. In addition, curtains protect the room from migration of the contaminants, i.e. flue gases, dust, leaves, etc. Next, in summer air curtains secure the room cooled by AC against the loss of cold air or inflow of warm air from the outside. The barrier produced during the period that does not require heating function is based only on the use of air stream generated in the curtain without its heating fan operation only.
  18. Door sensor VTS – can it be used to any type of the air curtain?
The reed switch offered by VTS will be able to serve air curtains with EC motors only.
  19. How to mount a device properly in vertical position?
For vertical mounting use screws M8x70. Screw 2 or 3 handles through the flat washers to the threaded sleeves mounted at the top section of the housing. Keep a minimum distance of 10 cm from the floor in order to provide access to the water drain nozzles from the heat exchanger and the terminal strip.
  20. Is there any difference in terms of noise level between wing curtains with EC and AC motors?
The noise generated by the air curtain is the result of the fan impeller operation and expeditious flow of air within the device. The motor itself, regardless of the type , generates very little noise, which is incomparably quieter than the noise of the impeller. Therefore, regardless of the motor type the difference in the noise generated by the entire device will be indistinguishable by the human ear.
